Luke 10: 38-42 "Catch the Flame: Burning Long vs. Burning Out"
In Luke's account of Mary and Martha, the two sisters seem to represent two extremes. Martha represents the dutiful hostess who ironically, is drawn away from her guest by making all kinds of preparations for him. Mary on the other hand seems to represent someone who has chosen the "work" of contemplation or to listen attentively to Jesus. Both tasks are necessary to a healthy Spiritual life. But it also seems like the order greatly affects the outcome. Martha, occupying herself with much to do, became distracted, while Mary chose to listen attentively to Jesus and was commended for it.
With which of the two sisters do we most identify? Can we learn something from both Mary & Martha?
